Bruxism
Bruxism is the situation when someone is grinding his/her teeth mostly during the night or sometimes even during the day basically due to stress. Modern life is full of external stressors, a factor that has increased the number of patients (adults and children) who suffer from bruxism.
Some of the most evident problems of bruxism are enamel abrasion, tooth cracks, headaches and facial muscle pain/tension/sensitivity when waking up in the morning.
The long-term side-effects of bruxism can be detrimental for tooth structures because their longevity is compromised by the extensive enamel breakdown, which can reach even deeper layers of tooth substances such as the dentine. In severe cases, bruxism leads to pulp shrinkage.
Custom-made splints can be constructed based on your teeth and these are worn usually at night or any other time of the day that you find yourself bruxing your teeth.
